A small business website costs anywhere from a few hundred dollars a year with a website builder you set up yourself, to several thousand dollars with a professional designer. Squarespace plans cost $12 to $25 per month billed yearly, and WebFX, which surveyed 250 US marketing professionals, puts basic professional web design at $6,500 to $15,000 on average. The price depends on the number of pages, features such as booking or an online store, and who writes the text and takes the photos. At Amana Digital USA, business websites start from $490 and online stores from $890.
Key points
- Do it yourself: a website builder such as Squarespace costs $12 to $25 per month billed yearly, plus your time.
- Professional design: WebFX puts basic web design at $6,500 to $15,000 on average; small agencies and freelancers often charge less.
- Yearly costs continue after launch: domain, hosting or builder plan, and updates.
- Pages, features, languages and content creation drive most of the price.
- A written quote should list pages, features, extra costs, timeline and who owns the site.
- Amana Digital USA: business websites from $490, online stores from $890, in USD.
The three ways to get a website, and what each costs
The biggest difference in price comes from who builds the site.
- Website builder (do it yourself): Squarespace costs $12, $17 or $25 per month on a yearly plan, or $19, $27 or $36 month to month (squarespace.com, checked 29 October 2026). Wix and others are similar and change prices often with promotions. The cost is low, but you do the design, text, photos and Google setup.
- Freelancer: prices vary the most, from a few hundred dollars to several thousand. Check live sites they built, and who handles text, photos and updates.
- Agency or studio: WebFX, which surveyed 250 US marketing professionals, puts basic professional web design at $6,500 to $15,000 on average. Our business websites start from $490, because our production team works from Agadir, Morocco, while clients in Greater Boston meet our US Director in Revere.
What drives the price of a website?
- Number of pages: a one-page site, or a page for each service, area and offer.
- Features: booking, online ordering, quote forms, a blog, an online store with payments.
- Languages: each extra language adds pages to write and check.
- Content: if text has to be written and photos taken, that is part of the work.
- Design: an adapted template costs less than a design made for you from scratch.
- Google setup: page titles, structured data, Search Console and a matching Google Business Profile.
The yearly cost after launch
Plan for running costs, not only the first invoice.
- Domain name: renewed every year.
- Hosting or builder subscription: monthly or yearly.
- Updates: new prices, menus, photos and pages, done by you or paid for.
- Maintenance: security and plugin updates on platforms such as WordPress.
What small businesses actually spend
In the same WebFX survey, the most common answer from companies with 1 to 10 employees was $501 to $1,000 per year on web design (31% of them). Most small businesses do not rebuild every year: they pay for a site once, then for hosting and small updates, and redesign every few years when the site looks dated or stops bringing customers.
What should be in a website quote?
- The list of pages and features, and the timeline.
- What costs extra: domain, hosting, text, photos, extra languages, third-party tools.
- Who owns the domain and the website (it should be you).
- How you update the site later, and what changes cost after launch.
- Whether the site is set up for Google and connected to your Google Business Profile.
