An ecommerce website costs from about $29 per month with a store builder you set up yourself (Shopify Basic, billed yearly) to $5,000 and well beyond with a large agency (WebFX gives $5,000 to $100,000+ for agency web development). In Greater Boston, the lowest published prices we found for a small online store built for you start around $1,000 to $1,500. On top of the build, plan for hosting or a monthly plan, and a fee of about 2.5% to 2.9% plus 30¢ on each card sale. At Amana Digital USA, online stores start from $890.

The three ways to build an online store, and what each costs
The biggest difference in price comes from who builds the store and on which platform.
- Store builder, done by you: Shopify costs $29 (Basic), $79 (Grow) or $299 (Advanced) per month billed yearly, or $39, $105 and $399 month to month (checked 30 October 2026). You choose a theme, add products and write the pages yourself; paid apps and themes come on top.
- WooCommerce, done by you or a developer: WooCommerce is free, with no monthly subscription. You pay for hosting ($25 to $350 per month for most stores, according to WooCommerce) and for any paid extensions ($29 to $299 per year each).
- Built for you by an agency or freelancer: WebFX gives $5,000 to $100,000+ for agency web development. In Greater Boston, the lowest published prices we found for a small online store start around $1,000 to $1,500, and typical quotes run from $1,500 to $5,000. Our online stores start from $890.
What drives the cost of an ecommerce website?
- Number of products: 20 products are quick to add; 2,000 products with options (sizes, colors) need imports and more checking.
- Features: customer accounts, promo codes, wishlists, subscriptions, bookings or wholesale prices.
- Payments and shipping: card payments, local pickup, delivery zones, shipping rates and taxes.
- Content: product photos, product descriptions, and the shipping, returns and about pages.
- Languages: each extra language adds pages, products and checks.
- Integrations: accounting, inventory, email marketing or a point-of-sale system.
Monthly and per-sale costs after launch
An online store has running costs that a simple website does not.
- Plan or hosting: a Shopify plan, or hosting for a WooCommerce store.
- Payment fees: on each card sale, for example 2.9% + 30¢ on Shopify Basic online, or about 2.5% to 2.9% + 30¢ with WooPayments.
- Apps and extensions: paid add-ons for features the platform does not include.
- Domain: renewed every year.
- Updates and maintenance: new products, prices and photos, and security updates on WordPress.
Shopify or WooCommerce: which costs less?
Shopify is simple to start and hosting is included, but you pay the plan every month, plus apps. WooCommerce has no monthly platform fee and the store stays yours on your own hosting, but it needs someone to set up and update it.
For a small store that someone else builds, the total cost over two or three years is often close; the choice depends more on who will run the store day to day. We build on WordPress and WooCommerce, the platform behind all of the online stores in our portfolio.
What should be in an online store quote?
- The number of products included, and who adds them.
- The features, payment methods and shipping options.
- What costs extra: domain, hosting, apps or extensions, photos, extra languages.
- Who owns the store, the domain and the customer data (it should be you).
- How you manage products and orders yourself, and what help costs after launch.
- The timeline, and when the checkout is tested.
